Lat Machines: The Way To A Trim Waist And A More Toned Back And Arms.
Lat is short for latissimus dorsi. This is the large back muscle that originates in the lower and mid back and attaches to the upper arm bone. This is the muscle that you see on bodybuilders that is under their arms and looks like their wings when they flex their upper body.
The basic exercise that is performed on the lat machine is the lat pulldown. It can be performed with an overhand grip or and underhand grip. It would be useful to include both varieties in your routine so as to stimulate the muscle in more varieties and to encourage more adaptation which will result in more growth.
As a general rule you should only do the lat machine pull-down to the front of your head and not behind your head. The reason for this is that when you do a lat pull down behind the head, you place the anterior (front) capsule of the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint under extreme load, via the use of a long lever. This often results in the capsular ligaments being lengthened and or damaged. When this occurs repeatedly, the ligaments will stretch, resulting in shoulder instability, and often impingement syndrome.
By using the lat pulldown machine it is easy to see how you will strengthen the muscles of the back and arms as these are directly involved in the action of pulling the bar down. But how does the lat pulldown give you a trimmer waist?
Well it is in perception. When you increase the tone and size of your back muscles and enhance the latissimus muscles your body appears to take on a v shape. This v shape gives the appearance of a smaller waist.
So include the use of the lat pull down machine in your routine to give you a more aesthetic and toned upper body and a smaller appearance to your waist as well as more stability for your postural muscles in your upper back. The lat pulldown is an indispensable part of any strength training routine.
